SunRocket's burn-out leaves a lot up in the air
SunRocket and its 200,000 customers are the latest to find out the hard way that pure VoIP is a tough business. Recent layoffs suggested that SunRocket was losing altitude, but when subscribers found they couldn't make calls on Monday and recordings replaced the voices of real people at the company's Vienna, VA headquarters, it was clear that SunRocket had aborted its mission and position as the #2 Internet phone service supplier in the U.S.
How quickly did SunRocket fall? Just last year, FierceVoIP named the company to its Fierce 15 list. According to the proliferation of reports published since Tuesday, subscribers left in the lurch by SunRocket's unannounced termination of service are finding refuge under the wings of other VoIP providers. Meanwhile, everyone involved in the VoIP industry is trying to characterize just what SunRocket's very sudden demise means for VoIP business models, regulation and customer perception of the technology and its remaining service providers.
