1. Vyke is here to save the day
Comment | Forward to a friend

If Vyke Communications' execs haven't already considered it, let me offer them the idea of adopting the cartoon character Underdog as company mascot. Like Underdog, Vyke is here to save the day for people who've had it with mobile operators' attempts to thwart mobile VoIP. Vyke has announced that later this year it will introduce an upgrade to its mobile software that will give subscribers' handsets superpowers that can undo anything MNOs do to cripple their built-in VoIP capabilities. In a Vyke press release, CEO Kjetil Bøhn said, "Users need to remember that...attempts to keep mobile VoIP out of the market amount to nothing less than an announcement that the mobile operators intend to continue overcharging consumers for as long as they can."

Many early FMC offerings in Europe have met with lackluster results, despite the early promise of new revenue streams for wireless carriers and wireline operators. Nevertheless, analysts still say that the U.S. is ripe for fixed mobile convergence. What's the real story behind FMC? Are there current success stories? Register now!

2. Warding off big hack attacks
Comment | Forward to a friend

If it's too good to be true, it probably isn't so good after all. Is this the case with VoIP? Not yet. But as VoIP matures, people are starting to figure out new ways to abuse the very things we like so much about it. Hackers are no exception. Getting in front of them instead of trying to play catch-up is the best way to avoid trouble from hackers.

3. Jajah lures iPhone subs
Comment | Forward to a friend

Wasting no time, Jajah is taking iPhone subscribers to school on how they can make cheap VoIP calls with their expensive new toys. The pitch, called Free.Your.iPhone, encourages iPhoners to use their phones' Web browsers to go to the mobile Jajah site, enter their Jajah user name and password and click on a number in their address book to make a global call and save a bundle in the process. A person making a call to the U.K. could save 20 cents a minute. Zat's fabulous, dahhhhling!

4. 711 opens VoIP door a little wider
Comment | Forward to a friend

First it was CALEA and E911. Now VoIP providers also must support 711 functionality to enable the disabled to take advantage of VoIP. While it makes manufacturing products and providing services more complex, it's nice to know that people who are hard of hearing or speech impaired can enjoy the benefits of VoIP like the rest of us. In addition to offering functionality, VoIP providers must contribute to the Telecommunications Relay Services (TRS) fund. TRS helps pay for the operators who connect 711 calls.

5. ABI offers SIP, UMA forecasts
Comment | Forward to a friend

The analysts at ABI Research certainly have been busy. They've released two new research briefs: one on Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and another on Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA). The SIP brief forecasts that SIP services will become the norm after 2010 and rapidly come to dominate the world's telecom markets. ABI says by 2012 about half of all telecom users will be using at least one SIP-based service, which in turn will generate more than $150 billion in annual service revenue. In the UMA brief, ABI forecasts that because of delays in the the development of competing solutions, Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) will capture 65 million fixed mobile convergence subscribers by 2012.
