Bangladesh ISPs ask for VoIP licenses
"Freedom of the press," the author A.J. Liebling once wrote, "is guaranteed only to those who own one." In that spirit, we salute the ISPs of Bangladesh. You may remember that the Bangladeshi government recently cracked down severely on unauthorized VoIP carriers and call centers--which is to say, all VoIP activity in the country. ISPs there are now petitioning the government to issue licenses for VoIP. Those licenses, it may not surprise you to learn, should be issued to parties who can be trusted to easily monitor call traffic and remit revenues. In other words, the ISPs themselves. Competition is good, apparently, especially if you can monopolize it.
