CALEA compliance
Speaking of trapping calls, netheads are still thinking hard about what it will take to make VoIP compliant with CALEA. If you came in late, CALEA is the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act, which requires carriers to let the cops tap into phone calls. It's the FCC's job to enforce it, and carriers--IP carriers, too--have to get in line by May 2007. It turns out that packet-based telephony doesn't wiretap so well, although there are ideas (which are admittedly flawed) emerging on how that might be done.
