Carrier IP telephony revs climb 7% in Q2

The Dell'Oro Group reported that carrier IP telephony equipment market revenues increased 7 percent sequentially in Q2 to $737 million. While the quarter-over-quarter gain was much needed, Dell'Oro vice president Greg Collins said seasonality was likely responsible for the revenue increase, and hesitated to predict that Q3 would show more sequential growth.

"Q2 is usually strong from a sales perspective, and Q1 this year was really bad across a lot of different technologies," Collins said in an interview. "We saw more purchasing of licenses and equipment in Q2, and IP business trunks did especially well. It's hard to say if it's going to grow again next quarter though."

Collins said Nortel regained the market share lead in Q2, but its revenues were flat; Previous market share leader Huawei lost share during the quarter, letting Nortel regain the top spot, according to Collins.

Collins said SIP trunking drove the majority of the 33 percent sequential increase in IP business trunking revenue, and he said he expects this segment to be strong through the year.
