Cisco releases its super switch
No one will be surprised to hear the company that undoubtedly is best placed to win from the flood of bandwidth demands, Cisco, is putting its money where its mouth is and this week released its latest super fast switch --the Nexus 7000. The switch will carry up to 15 trillion bits of data a second, which Cisco told the New York Times could transfer all 90,000 Netflix movies in 38.4 seconds or send a two-mega pixel digital image to every human being on earth in 28 minutes.
The switch is targeted at the $9.7 billion data center segment for use by big corporates and ISPs, all struggling with bandwidth demands from consumers eager to stream and download video and games. It has been four years in the making and has employed over 500 engineers at a R&D cost of over a $1 billion. The architecture reflects a service centric model which has the network playing a key role orchestrating resources and scaling workloads.
