Cloud telephony app company Twilio gets VC money
Seattle-based Twilio has announced it has secured venture funding from the Founders Fund and Mitch Kapor. It also announced a bunch of marquee customers.
Twilio didn't announce the amount of the terms, but Mitch Kapor is no dummy when it comes to technology. He was founder of Lotus and designer of Lotus 1-2-3, a founding chair of the Mozilla Foundation, co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and a founding investor of RealNetworks.
Started in November by Amazon Web Services "veteran" Jeff Lawson, Twilio allows developers to build phone system apps in the cloud (well Amazon Web Services cloud...), such as automated calls or recordings, and to scale those services up and down as needed. Customers are charged on a pay-as-you-go/as-you-use basis.
Announced customers/users include Sony Music, Exxon Mobile, and the Heinkein, Cheetos, and Monsanto Roundup brands.
