Comcast claims to be a telco major

Tools

Comcast chief Brian Roberts has declared the cable giants digital voice product to be the fastest growing home telephone service in the U.S. and with more than 4 million voice customers the cable giant has quietly turned into a major telco. This compares with the 2.5 million VoIP customers who currently use debt ridden Vonage.

The digital voice service uses Comcast's own cable network to ensure a high quality voice offering and Roberts this week announced a series of service add ons to build out Comcast's voice-based revenue stream. Most interesting is its feature-rich cordless phone that includes search and other data services typically found only on cell phones.

The market has been very tough on Comcast, and it seems FCC boss Kevin Martin is obsessed with cable's dominance, but Comcast's simple, if vanilla, approach to expanding its digital footprint has seen it emerge as easily the most successful triple play operator in the U.S. market.
