Jeff Pulver examines Twitter's impact at 140 Characters Conference

Tools

Following up on the success of his HD Communications Summit, which he modestly predicted would become "a milestone date in the history of the VoIP industry," Jeff Pulver kicked off his inaugural 140 Characters Conference in New York Tuesday. The event, which focuses on the impact of Twitter and real-time communications, was well-timed given the prominence the microblogging service has had this past week in reporting on the Iranian election protests.

While on its face Twitter doesn't have a clear connection to the telephony world, Twitter or some other form of real time collaboration ability could be a very interesting integrated feature for unified communications platforms, especially for the monitoring of company mentions or important topics. Several companies even have reported using Twitter to gain accounts, and it has also helped a few companies avoid publicity debacles by allowing them to address issues quickly after picking up on Twitter feeds discussing the situation. These use cases and others deserve more fleshing out, so Pulver announced two additional 140 Characters Conferences: One in London and another in Los Angeles.
