Microsoft CEO speaks out about VoIP
It's no secret that Microsoft is getting into the VoIP business, but statements this week from combative CEO Steve Ballmer have a somewhat different tone than what we've heard previously. The AP caught Ballmer speaking to a Microsoft conference in Tokyo, where he said his company will "enter the voice-over-IP market in the beginning of next year." We know about its communications server and its deal with Nortel. But Ballmer apparently was talking about deploying VoIP across its entire product line--and the timing seems to be consistent with the expected shipment of the next-generation Vista operating system.

You do a good job of bringing individual articles to readers. One area you can improve on is starting to synthesize information you have reported over weeks to form more insights into what's going on. Ideally you see the trends, you report them as part of a summary article and then the blogs will take it from there.
Here's one example. Today in your VoIP newsletter you reported on Microsoft announcing they are getting into VoIP in 2007. Your sister publication (today) highlighted how VF is standardizing on a few OS (Windows, Symbian, Linux). Nokia and their partners previously announced VoIP support on the series 60. This may well point towards MS pushing VoIP on their mobile devices AND perhaps VF thinking about VoIP across their different platforms. It would be interesting to see what people think of that. Your "Today's Spotlight" section sometimes does this, but most times it's just another article.
I suspect your team reviews hundreds of news articles before deciding what to put as the top 5. You have a lot of opportunity to create a synthesis type of newsletter (weekly of bi-weekly would be fine) that can be as much hypothesis as serious analysis.
Just a thought.
I am excited about the new feature and also about the prize!!
I hope Microsoft do their homework well before realeasing any products with integrated VoIP.
Look for Microsoft to buy Nortel's enterprise business within the next year or so. Nortel needs to do drastic things to turn their ship or make themselves more attractive for acquistion. Microsoft and Cisco are on an competitive collision course. Combine Microsoft's ownership of the desktop with Nortel's telephony competence and John Chambers will have his hands full.
