Report: UC growth from Green IT

Tools

A new Frost and Sullivan report predicts that our society's quest for all things green will lead to growth in the unified communications (UC) market.

With our focus on carbon footprints and our business' effects on the environment, more and more companies are realizing how teleconferencing, video conferencing and unified communication systems can cut down on travel costs and envrironmental impact. The trend is already being realized, the research firm reports, as the web conferencing services market in Europe grew by 19.3 percent in 2009.

The added bonus of going green with UC--companies are noticing--is that... it's cheaper! Less travel costs, less electricity bills. Also, by moving to UC systems, they are finding more effecient forms of communication within their organizations and with their customers.

Companies using virtual workplaces are finding that it is not only healthy for the planet, but as you point out, healthy for the bottom line as well. When organizations factor in the cost of travel combined with the loss of productivity that occurs while traveling - waiting at the airport, catching a taxi etc. -- virtual workplaces become even more attractive. The benefits increase immensely for global companies looking to bring together dispersed employees from around the world. In addition to the financial benefits and corporate responsibility, there have been several studies that show customers prefer to do business with organizations who take measures to contribute to a greener planet.

I was very excited to learn about this report from Frost and Sullivan since fighting global warming by using unified communications and collaboration is something I've written about on my blog. My most recent post was published just a few weeks before this report was released and touches on many of the same topics that the report highlights.

As I mention in the post, while we wait on the development and production of a sustainable green energy source, and the wide adoption of that source, we need to take measures now to create the next generation workplace. Unified communications and virtual environments are a great step in that direction.
