Satellite VoIP comes to Australia

Tools

Satellite is pretty much the last way you want to deliver broadband. It's comparatively slow and the 48,000 mile round-trip from ground to satellite to ground pretty much kills any kind of interactivity. Those are particularly bad characteristics for VoIP. Still, there are places in the world where there's just not a whole lot of choice, where bad broadband is better than none and cheap voice service is vital no matter how spotty. Rural Australia is one of those places, and MyNetPhone and URSYS say they've knocked down the problems and are teaming up to provide VoIP in some of the vast remote parts of the continent. They're not the first, apparently, but they may be the biggest players to address that market.

As we expand our Internet and e-publishing services outside our North American borders, I was intrigued, and really "mentally satisfied" after reading this weeks article.

Frankly, I had scant idea how an article about Aussie VoIP and how it could be successfully applied in rural areas would pertain to here in the States or Canada, but I learned a lot in a relatively short space.

Although satellite Internet access is not new, the idea of VoIP and VoIP users benefiting nearly directly from satellite was an eye opener.

In the final read of a short article, I was in fact spurred on to make contact with MyNetFone and I look forward to continued contacts.

I suggest India would be a better place for VOIP technologies. Many broadband service providers too are not aware of VOIP but it has great potential in India taking into consideration the IT market curve going upwards.

You may want to take a look at Omniglobe (www.omniglobe.com) which has experienced terrific success with satellite VoIP in Canada, Middle East and Africa.
