Silver Lake playing for Avaya?
I wrote last week about the talk that Nortel might buy Avaya. There are also reports that Avaya would simply be brought private through a buyout led by the Sand Hill Road private equity firm Silver Lake Partners. Silver Lake is sizable: it owns or owns stakes in companies including NASDAQ, Sabre (parent company of Travelocity), Flextronics, Seagate, and Gartner; among its former holdings are Ameritrade, Instinet, and MCI. It would be an interesting buy. Silver Lake plainly has access to cash and a deep background in international technology companies. And keeping Avaya independent may make more sense than tying it to one of its major competitors.
