Skype CEO: iPhone VoIP over 3G 'soon'
Hot off the announcement of its Verizon partnership, Skype didn't want to leave AT&T and the iPhone out. Om Malik over at GigaOm was able to corner Skype's CEO Josh Silverman and ask him about the VoIP over 3G Skype app and the answer was that it would be coming very soon. What does that mean? 'Soon' truly is anyone's guess, but Malik thinks it will be Q2 of 2010.
Skype claims to be fine tuning the 3G version of its popular iPhone app, and has yet to release it despite AT&T and Apple opening up the restrictions on VoIP over 3G on their network. One thing to keep in mind is probably the concern Skype has about quality of service. Already on record saying that the AT&T 3G network is strapped in major iPhone user areas, I am sure they are worried about how well their app will work over 3G once it goes live. Skype's latest tactic of teaming up with Verizon to send Skype calls over the voice network and the rest of the data over 3G is telling. Perhaps a similar deal will emerge for the iPhone?

Fring just flipped a switch and the app was able to make calls thru 3g, why skype can't do the same? jailbroken iphones can use skype on 3g and it works fine. So if you ask anyone experienced on the issue they will tell you that this is obviously due to the commercial deal with Verizon, they are just holding the iphone version. I'm an avid skype user but after seeing this their credibility just sunk like a Titanic made of lead. Too bad to see all companies insisting in leaving their customers behind.

So I use skype on my iphone as my cell service. I have AT&T "pay as you go" data service on it. Im in the process of jail breaking my phone so I can make 3G data calls with skype. As far as I know the reason skype can't normaly make 3G calls (with out jailbreak) is because of a contract the Apple has with AT&T. The contract states that no apps are allowed to make Voip calls over the 3G network. :( this is very sad for cheep people like me. But there is hope. I hear with the iPhone 4.0 system release skype will be able to work over 3G... but thats just an internet story
