SPOTLIGHT: VoIP Beats up U.S. Wireline; Wireless Data Drives Growth in U.S.

London-based Report Buyer says total revenue for the U.S. telecommunication industry has reached over $1 trillion. The "2008 USA - Telecoms, Wireless and Broadband" report says traditional fixed-line customers continue to drop--no surprise there--with Verizon and AT&T both reporting declines of around 10 percent in residential wireless accounts.  It's all VoIP's fault, with cable subscriber growth rates around 75 percent.

Out of the $458 billion of telecom service revenues noted, wireless accounted for approximately 31 percent. Wireless data revenues in late 2007 accounted for approximately 18 percent of total wireless service revenues, up from a meager 4 percent in 2004. The majority of wireless data revenues were being generated by non-messaging applications such as music downloads, mobile TV, video blogs, and Internet-accessed entertainment services.
