The perils of Vonage
Maybe things are more dire for Vonage than we'd thought. Having lost a patent suit to Verizon two weeks ago, a federal judge now says Vonage has two weeks from this past Friday to stop using those patents. This isn't entirely unexpected or unusual; RIM faced a couple of near-death deadlines after it lost a patent trial to NTP. But there's nothing like negotiating with an gun to your head, and there's been no public indication that Verizon is interested in anything other than shutting Vonage down. Vonage still insists that it can provide service without using the patents. It has until next Friday to prove it. There are a million or so customers holding their breaths.

Vonage will not be forced to cut a million customers off.
There is no way the FCC would allow a million or so customers to be without 911 service, phone service or anything like that. It just won't happen.
That being said, Vonage is a one trick pony when it comes to the telecommunications industry...

Makes companies like Lightyear Alliance (see www.zimmerly.mylightyear.com) stand out even more -- they have their own patents and will probably pick up lots of Vonages customers.
