Verizon's VoiceWing undercuts Vonage

Tools

Taking a cue from the Vonage IPO and Verizon's 6.9 percent decline in access lines during the first quarter of this year over last year, Verizon has undercut Vonage's Premium Unlimited Plan at $24.99. In a competitive response, Verizon has set the price of its VoiceWing VoIP service to $24.95 over this weekend. TeleGeography research director Stephan Beckert points out signs that consumers had been staying away in droves: "Some of the biggest declines [in retail residential lines] came in New York and New Jersey--states where Cablevision and Time Warner have a big presence. Now Comcast is rolling out its service in Pennsylvania, MD, DC and other Verizon strongholds." Previously, VoiceWing was available at $29.95 for the first year, and $34.95 after the first 12 months. It will be interesting to see how Verizon strategizes its next moves to please its customers and investors and balance the quadruple-play act against competitors.
