VoIP hacker gets two years

A 23-year-old who was part of a two-man VoIP hacker team has been sentenced to two years in prison, VoIP News reports. Robert Moore of Spokane, Wash., hacked into VoIP provider systems and stole 10 million minutes valued at more than $1 million. His partner, Edwin Pena, then used the minutes to set up a wholesale VoIP business. Moore also received a fine of $150,000. Pena jumped bail and is believed to have fled the country.

Moore reportedly testified that he hacked into H.323 gateways exclusively, and gained access into corporate domains by guessing the password, often "Cisco" or "admin." He said that basic monitoring and security systems would have averted the hacks.

Two years is one-tenth of a lifetime for a 20-something, and $150,000 is a very, very nice automobile. Since his sentencing, Moore has been singing like a warbler about his hack job. Perhaps there's a white hat in his future. Department of Defense, take note. Ixnay on the acronym asswordspay.
