VoIP is evolutionary, not disruptive, technology

Tools

If you're reading this newsletter--and anecdotal evidence would indicate that you are--you're probably a big fan of VoIP. But even as legacy phone systems are being pushed aside by open-system PBXes, don't kid yourself: Telecom buyers aren't beating a path to VoIP because it's the latest and greatest. Research companies that track PBX installations are finding that even though VoIP accounts for an increasing number of PBX lines, those lines that are being deployed as legacy systems are reaching the end of their natural lifespans. Telecom managers are not abandoning their natural caution and rushing to VoIP. Rather, it appears that they are buying VoIP as a replacement technology, not as displacement or disruptive. The upshot: VoIP will still beat TDM; it will just take longer than some might expect.
