SPOTLIGHT: 10 ways to get better VoIP deals

With tighter credit and slower sales, it's a buyer's market. VoIP-News pulls out 10 ways to get the best deal on VoIP systems and services - it's not a list resellers are going to enjoy much.

At the top of the list is asking for competitive bids, but making sure you have a tight RFP and perhaps a consultant to garbage-filter convoluted answers to what should be straightforward technical specifications. Working the system with a multi-year contract on software and/or maintenance is suggested along with trying to get free feature upgrades and other goodies thrown in. Bundles are also a good way to save some cash.

Like car salespeople, vendors and salespeople have end-of-month and end-of-year quotas to make, so you've always got some leverage if you pick the right time to negotiate. We're not so sure that last recommendation -- "being a showcase for emerging technology" -- is the best way to save cash; pioneers are typically the guys with the arrows sticking out of their backs.

For more:
- VoIP-News lays out a 10 step program to save cash on your new VoIP system. Article.

DiVitas Networks, Top VoIP Company: FierceVoIP, Fierce 15

Where it's based: Mountain View, Calif.
When it was founded: 2005
Website: www.divitas.com

Why it's Fierce: Mobile UC is the place to be and the DiVitas corporate vision continues to steadily evolve beyond the me-too basics of dual-mode, FMC yadda-yadda into an integrated philosophy including microblogging, social networking, and visual voicemail features. Appliances are out and a software-only philosophy is in. Finally, the company also has a hosted service option for VoIP providers along with its traditional enterprise model.

In three years time, DiVitas has rapidly moved from the "race car" logo award phase into announcing customer deployments across a variety of markets, including carrier, education, government, and health care. We're looking forward for the company to take the next step along the Hourihan path with making bigger and better customer wins. And bonus points for the openness of founder/CEO/foodie Vivek Khuller.

XO nets 15,000th enterprise VoIP customer

XO Communications announced Monday it has deployed its XO IP Flex business VoIP bundle to 15,000 enterprise customers. Launched launched in April 2005, XO says it now supports more than 475,000 customer employees.

XO IP Flex is a managed service set that conveniently can be delivered over existing equipment and is priced as a single service rather than on a per phone line basis; customers purchase port speeds anywhere between 1.5 and 45 Mbps, instead of paying additional fees for each added voice line. So, XO sells an IP connection, adds on hosted services on top with simplified pricing and everyone is happy.

XO Communications has continually added new features to IP Flex including integration with XO's MPLS IP-VPN service and adding unified communications/mobile UC capabilities with XO Anywhere.

For more:
- see the XO release here

Three wishes for Digium

As the afterglow from AstriCon fades, I think there are three areas where Digium could do a better job telling its story. To set the stage, I need to turn the clock back to June and NXTcomm with a conversation at the Heart Bar in Las Vegas

I was hanging out, ah, meeting, with Seamus Hourihan of Acme Packet, and the discussion turned to the subject of awards and customer wins and how they relate to companies and their lifecycle of announcements in building a reputation. Since Acme Packet currently has around half of the SBC market, I figure Seamus might have a clue here. [Apologies in advance to Seamus if I misquote him; it was late and there was a lot of smoke in the bar]

"When [start-up] companies start out, first they talk about awards, because that's all they have. So they talk about that," he said. "Then, they make smaller customer announcements, because that's who they get. Finally, they make large customer announcements and rack those up."

Applying the Hourihan evolutionary scale, Digium is somewhere between steps two and three. It really doesn't need awards per say; the open source community of developers embracing Asterisk is far more valuable than any sort of award you could purchase. Still, there's a laundry list of accolades (if not a PowerPoint race car logo slide) from eWeek, TMC, Linux Magazine, InfoWorld and VoIP-News, not to mention FierceVoIP.

In lieu of customer announcements, Digium has its Innovation Awards to recognize what people are doing with Asterisk. You have to dig a bit, but users include health care (Emdeon Business Services) and call center applications (Aheeva). NTT software is currently conducting a big time trial of Asterisk and adoption by a large carrier brand name would do a lot to dispel the prevailing mythology that "Asterisk doesn't scale."

(Another PowerPoint race car slide with customers/users would be a good thing as well - and I'm a guy who's snarky about race car slides).

But - at first glance, the Skype/Digium deal sounds good, but it's not Paris Hilton hot. Having access to over 300 million users on the biggest non-carrier carrier is a big deal, but the devil is in the details. Skype needs help breaking into the business market and an Asterisk box providing call routing capability to a bunch of independent desktop clients is just what the telephony doctor ordered. I'm sure Digium will sell more software, and Skype will be able to get its foot in the (product/service overcrowded, certainly cruising for a right-sizing) SMB market with Asterisk.

In my opinion, what Digium needs is to 1) better tell/communicate the stories about the customers and users it already has, 2) have a few clear big installation customer/user stories to both a) lend credibility to the company and b) dispel once and for all the "Asterisk doesn't scale" myth, and 3) Get one or two big corporate/IT endorsements.

We're starting to see work on 3) with the current announcements with Skype and BroadSoft on the partnership side, but my wish for 2009 would be to see someone like IBM embrace Asterisk. IBM has a big love for open source, is progressive enough to actually think "out of the box" to do this, and has both carrier telephony and UC/enterprise presence. I've been told that IBM would likely prefer to remain neutral since it is so entrenched dealing with proprietary/legacy hardware.

- Doug

Ericsson will be the sole supplier for Cable & Wireless's GSM network, as C&W launches its new fixed mobile convergence (FMC) service in the UK. As C&W's "exclusive managed services partner," Ericsson will be responsible for running the network for five years.

Under the contract, Ericsson will supply a complete core and radio access network designed to provide indoor fixed and mobile coverage for enterprise users, and to allow for seamless roaming between C&W's network and other networks when users move outdoors. C&W will provide the network connectivity for the GSM base stations directly to existing enterprise data networks. Ericsson will also supply a "service-layer" network with solutions for service provisioning, SMS and voice mail.

C&W has announced Tesco as its first corporate customer for its new FMC service, so there are likely a few more to follow.

FierceVoIP Leaders: Jonathan Christensen, GM of audio and video for Skype

Jonathan Christensen will be speaking at ITEXPO next week.

FierceVoIP: Jonathan, tell us a little about Skype's current offerings.

Christensen: Well, we are using Skype technology right now to place this call. I dialed my PR representative in London to chat briefly before this interview began. We then dialed into the bridge we are on currently through Skype.

Skype is shifting from pure VoIP and IP telephony to offering rich, multi-modal communications. In the past, on the old telephone system, it was voice and voice only. Now, customers want the ability to text, file share, access rich audio and video in one communications interface, and Skype wants to position to provide these services.

FierceVoIP: What would a good example of the benefits of rich communication be?

Christensen: For instance, earlier today I had a conference call with some of our product developers. While we were engaging in the discussion, I sent them a PowerPoint presentation over the same connection, which we were then able to discuss in real time. They responded by sending me an Excel spreadsheet of some of their results, which we also discussed real time. So I think you can see the benefit of this rich communication, both in this enterprise setting, and for the individual consumer as well.

FierceVoIP: What has Skype done to set itself apart from competitors in the space?

Christensen: At first, Skype was purely a voice tool. But it had great mass appeal because it was free, easy to use, and easy to download. Then, we improved the model by solving scalability issues, audio issues and packet loss problems, so that we were always responding to customer feedback and improving the offering.

FierceVoIP: Will Skype remain primarily a voice company, or can we expect major changes, such as new market entries or products?

Christensen: I think we will continue to iterate the flagship offering, because we continue to see good revenue and think there is a lot of room for growth there. We are also looking into the enterprise space, and we are putting increased focus on mobile applications and continuing to develop down that path. I can't comment on specific platforms, but rest assured, we are looking at adopting Skype technology to the relevant ones.

FierceVoIP: What do you think the next three to five years hold for the industry?

Christensen: I think the continued development of scalable, robust solutions involving VoIP. I think the business UC sector will be a good indicator of the prospects in the mass market. The traditional limiters, such as battery life and CPU power, will probably get solved or continue to hinder in that sector, which will speak volumes about commercial applications. I think Skype's revenue possibilities in this space are fantastic, and I think we have a great leadership position in the area to continue growth. In three years, I think Skype will be a larger, more profitable company still offering the same rich communications experience to a global customer base.

VoIP Auto QoS with Cisco

Gotta love it when Cisco adds an automatic QoS configuration command for VoIP network tweaking into its routers.

AutoQoS, a new command in IOS, allows a router to classify types of traffic by importance and ensure that the traffic is passed along as quickly as possible. If necessary, other traffic gets queued until the higher priority traffic has gone through.

The new command is limited in scope but is designed to prioritize VoIP traffic for a "good enough" solution, rather than having to put a network admin through a lot of hoops and pain for router tweaking. AutoQoS speeds up administrator training, makes VoIP often go much smoother and creates config templates that can be modified and copied for deployment as needed.

Configuration requires three commands, one to specify interface, a second to specify bandwidth and a third to invoke AutoQoS for VoIP.

For more:
- Read the nicely geek-speak piece on Cisco AutoQoS for VoIP. Article

Agito launches new UC solution

Agito Networks announced the release of RoamAnywhere v2.0, a UC solution that enables secure remote VoIP calls, allows enterprise customers to keep a "dual persona" and cuts costs through advanced location routing technology. Agito's software is also compatible with thirty five dual-mode handsets, which company co-founder Pejman Roshan said is far more than any competitor.

Roshan said the dual persona capability RoamAnywhere v2.0 offers is very attractive to enterprise customers.

"Our application allows the customer to connect to the office securely and remotely, with the additional benefit of having dedicated numbers for business and home life accessible on the same VoIP enabled phone," Roshan said. "Customers can flag specific contacts, either setting them to always come through, to come through only during certain hours, or to never come through."

An additional benefit of RoamAnywhere v2.0 is a group of sophisticated proactive and policy based settings for Least Cost Routing, which is controlled by an administrator to optimize performance and cut costs.

"The standard way calls used to be transferred in similar solutions was through reactive measures, such as when a call started to lose signal strength," Roshan said. "Our solution lets administrators set points for instant transfer, such as doorways to the business. This allows seamless transfer before a call starts to fail, which improves quality of service."

Network operators can also set switch points between cellular and VoWLAN services on basis of battery life and location of calls to cut costs on long distance service.

Raketu launches browser agnostic VoIP service

Raketu has announced a new service into its VoIP offerings Friday with the release of its RakOut WebPhone. The new service allows users to make a VoIP call to landline or mobile phones from any web browser; previously, users could only make a call from computers with Microsoft Windows. The service does not require a download, so calls can be made directly from Raketu's website.

Needless to say, this adds Raketu to the lengthly list of VoIP service providers that started with web clients, added dial-out capabilities and typically end up with unique phone numbers with a <something>In service.

Based out of New York City, Raketu hopes to lure business travelers with the accessibility and affordability of the service, in comparison to traditional phone services or mobile offerings.

For more
- Raketu hopes to RakOut to VoIP success.

CTIA Wireless IT: A looming 800 lb fruit in the room

The iPhone has set the gold standard for web browsing on a mobile device. Apple is reportedly making a million dollars a day on iPhone application downloads--money going straight into the company's pocket. So why isn't Apple playing a more prominent role at CTIA I.T.?

Sure, AT&T is the exclusive U.S. iPhone carrier, so maybe Apple doesn't need to have a big booth presence at CTIA I.T. But can you really have a discussion about enterprise IT applications without someone pulling out an iPhone--either figuratively or literally--within 30 seconds? HSBC may roll out iPhones to its 300,000 person workforce, displacing a whole lot of Blackberry devices.

AT&T knows the enterprise wants iPhones. Business customers can now order iPhones online directly through AT&T's Premier Enterprise program--no waiting in line down at the Apple or AT&T store.

It's not just AT&T doing what its business customers want. Oracle says there have been more than 23,000 downloads of its free Oracle Business Indicators iPhone application as of mid-August. Nearly 19,000 downloads were to U.S. phones, and it's likely a good number are actively being used; you don't download Oracle apps for the cheap entertainment value.

Apple has maintained an aloofness when it comes to the enterprise, doing just enough to get devices (desktops, laptops, servers, iPhones) in the door--and that's it. However, the ability of the 3G iPhone to act as a dual-mode phone (Both GIPS and SPIRIT DSP have released VoIP stacks) means that custom-tailored FMC/Mobile UC applications aren't far behind.

Will Apple stand up and take a more active role in the corporate arena? Or will it be content to simply *ahem* grab the low-hanging fruit? Nokia and RIM would certainly like to know the answers. -Doug

VoIP service revenues up 52% in '07

Worldwide revenues from hosted VoIP and managed IP PBX services continue to power along, reports Infonetics Research.

Infonetics' latest report, "VoIP Services and Subscribers," pegs the hosted VoIP/managed IP PBX services market at $24 billion in 2007. In 2006, the market grew by 66 percent. Growth in the "strong" double digits is expected through at least 2011, with hosted VoIP services continuing to outpace managed IP PBX services by far.

Residential services have been fueling market growth, according to Infonetics, with businesses moving comparatively slower in the adoption due to various roadblocks. However, business growth is expected to pick up as technology issues are resolved. SIP trunking and SIP trunking certification compatibility are two significant factors in market growth.

Other highlights show that the number of worldwide residential/SOHO VoIP subscribers grew 60 percent between 2006 and 2007 to more than 75 million. The largest gains occurred in North America and EMEA; although the Asia Pacific region still leads the pack, it isn't by much. EMA is expected to break away and lead the market through at least 2010.

Nortel Buys Pingtel

Nortel has bought Pingtel, a subsidiary of enterprise mobility firm Bluesocket. The open source IP PBX software/appliance division will hopefully have better luck moving forward.

Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but Nortel will acquire the key assets of Pingtel from Bluesocket, Pingtel's existing OEM relationship with Nortel will be brought in house and Pingtel employees will be integrated into Nortel's Billerica, Mass. facility. Pingtel and Nortel have been working together for a while on SIP-based enterprise solutions.

For the self-described "software-centric" Nortel, the acquisition adds to the company's R&D and software development capabilities. The new software capabilities are expected to help Nortel deliver unified communications solutions to enterprise customers in all segments. In the near term, Pingtel software pieces will appear on Nortel's SMB unified communications solution.

Pingtel's sipX open source IP PBX software is highly regarded for its ability to scale to support up to 10,000 users; as an independent entity, Pingtel landed Amazon.com as its largest publicly announced customer. The Amazon.com installation reportedly supports over 5,000 users in a high-availability configuration.

However, Pingtel's business history has been irregular. The company started out as an IP phone manufacturer, before ditching hardware to focus on software and sipX development. In 2007, the company actively sought a buyer, with Bluesocket finally acquiring them in July 2007.

Femtoprising

Femtocells, a technology initially focused on consumers, has now appeared in an enterprise solution announced by Tango Networks, AirWalk Communications and Tatara Systems.

The solution is being billed as an "Enterprise fixed-mobile convergence" (FMC) solution and combines AirWalk's EdgePoint femtocell, Tango Network's Abrazo (provides enterprise communications services and intelligent routing) and Tatara's Convergence Server to link mobile carrier service to the femtocell.

Mix everything together and you combine a mobile (cellular) network with the features and management capability of an enterprise UC solution or PBX and you don't have to do the whole dual-mode thing with WiFi; no specialized handsets. The joint solution also allows policy management to be handled by the enterprise for on-campus calling. A press release issue today says the solution has been "successfully demonstrated."

Femtocells are small cellular base stations connected to a cellular network through a broadband connection, extending/enhancing in-building service coverage. The concept has been rapidly embraced for the consumer markets in Europe and Asia, less so in North America; Sprint and (arguably) T-Mobile are slowly deploying femtocells.

UC Data Leakage Dangers

It's not just Light Reading that's talking about UC security this week. Osterman Research has conducted a
survey polling enterprises on their security thoughts and features about UC.

Companies are starting to understand that UC is a good
thing, but it creates even more opportunities for data leaks. Nearly 50 percent of respondents are
concerned about information leak prevention in their current or planned UC
implementation with 23 percent viewing leak prevention as a top priority, said
109 mid- to large-IT organizations in North America.

IT shops are worried that attackers get a menu of choices by
putting all communications traffic onto one common data network. An attacker
can intercept VoIP, IM and other traffic or choose to inflict a
denial-of-service attack by using VoIP to flood systems with session requests.

Outsider attacks, however, pale in comparison to insider
threats from either unintentional or accidental leaks, with 48 percent of
respondents worried about such a problem compared to 31 percent who worry
about data loss from malicious software.

For more:
- SearchSecurity.com reports on the UC

Microsoft and Unisys Offer Free UC Test Drive

Unisys is offering enterprise
customers a free test drive of Microsoft's UC services. Unisys is also working with Quintum
Technologies to handle the VoIP to PSTN piece.

The trial service allows companies to "kick the tires"on
Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007
and Microsoft Office LiveMeeting. It's
an interesting tactic that echoes back to comments recently made by Nortel
executives. Based upon Nortel and
Microsoft's experiences in running a joint collaboration lab, enterprise
customers want to try out UC services on a small scale. Once an enterprise is
able to demonstrate the value of UC implementation, it typically goes from a
smaller (50 to 500) seat deployment, to a much larger (factor of x10 or better)
one.

Under the free trial service,
implemented and managed by Unisys, organizations get the opportunity to
evaluate the features available in the Microsoft unified communications suite,
including email, calendaring and unified messaging, multi-party instant
messaging, and voice and video conferencing. Up to 20 accounts can be
established per customer, extending the trial experience to a larger group of
individuals across the company. A trial
lasts for 30 days and is set up through a Microsoft sales executive.

Unisys already offers email
management and hosted messaging services to a number of corporations and
handles more than two million Exchange mailboxes worldwide.

NXTcomm08, Las Vegas--NEC Corporation of America has announced its "Light IMS"
solution, incorporating Service Convergence Integrated Platform (SCI-P), a
carrier-grade converged multimedia and SIP-based network architecture.

Light IMS is designed to enable both residential and enterprise
applications. NEC is highlighting two applications using the services: Home
Monitoring for the residential market and a hosted UC/Centrex offering. Home monitoring enables end-users to get
customized home security updates on an IP-enabled device, so you can find out if
anyone is stealing your valuables from your desktop or mobile device.

UC/Centrex provides base PBX functional and VoIP cost savings with
additional premium (i.e. billable) features available including social
networking, dynamic conferencing, click-to-call, and voice recording. CRM integration
of UC/Centrex functionality can be done through a CRM API. NEC also offers a "Web Universal
Communications Service" for multi-site document sharing.

of those "strategic relationships" with SecureLogix to deliver voice security and management solutions to enterprise customers.

Under the relationship, Nortel and certified Nortel
resellers will market and sell SecureLogix's ETM System and related voice
security assessment and monitoring services as a part of Nortel's new Voice
Security Services offerings; the offerings combine SecureLogix's patented

SPOTLIGHT: VoIP in India 'On The Runway'

If minor changes in regulation are made, VoIP in India
could "take off in a big way" says Express
Computer. According to Frost and Sullivan, sales of IP PBX systems grew by
65 percent in 2007 while IP telephony revenues were $209 million. Gartner says the acceptance and adoption of
VoIP in India
is increasing with the market showing "signs of maturity." Growth is relatively
slow, however, when compared to other APAC markets, but the overall outlook is
positive.

VoIP is expected to drive down costs for consumers and drive
other services (web, audio, video conferencing) on the enterprise side. IP phone
handset costs, regulatory restrictions, and the low penetration of broadband in
India
are cited as hindering factors to growth. Extended
lifecycles may also play a role in hindering adoption, with products being
typically used for 8 years in India
as compared to 5 years in other countries.

Marketing mudding VoIP and UC; getting creative

VoIP marketing-speak gets slammed in an xchange piece reporting from Interop Las Vegas 2008. It is a "wealth conflicting lingo," forcing companies trying to get more creative in selling VoIP to the unbuying SMB masses.

On the creative front, ADTRAN is opening up more tiers in its channel program, in addition to launching an IP PBX and adding IP phones to its lineup. Smaller partners targeting 50-and-under users will be allowed to sell IP telephony solutions. Turns out the smaller VARs selling low-volume of ADTRAN gear already have an impressive foothold in the SMB market.

Avaya has added speech recognition for basic commands, as well as speech recognition technologies, with the know-how coming from Nuance. The "Freedom of Speech" capabilities include access to everything within Avaya's UC software through voice, and also adds speech access for IBM Lotus Domino 7.0. There's also Avaya HealthCheck, a proactive test to get a comprehensive view of what is going on within the communications network.

For more:
- xchange's view of the VoIP Scene at Interop
- Avaya's announcements for UC Freedom of Speech and HealthCheck

Fonality FACEes certification

Fonality has announced its very own ecosystem program, the Fonality Authorized Certified Ecosystem (FACE). (Why do I hear Billy Idol singing "Eyes without a Face" now? There's also some John Woo "FACEoff" action here, I'm sure of it).

FACE will certify third-party products for trixbox CE, trixbox Pro and PBXtra; certification validates interoperability with Fonality products and identifies the best components for use. First FACE partners include IP phone manufacturers Aastra and Polycom (no surprise), service provider Bandwidth.com, and hardware partner Sangoma (also not a surprise).

CEO Chris Lyman says the program is necessary to clear up the confusion in the open market, between "questionable" hardware and non-compliant providers. FACE should remove any worries about compliance, making everyone from customers to resellers to Fonality's tech support crew happier.

Fonality's arch-rival Digium relaunched their ecosystem program in October 2007, including offerings for software solutions, training and service provider partners, as well as straightforward compatibility. Are "FACEcon" and "Fonality world" on deck for later announcements this year?

For more:
- FACE Fonality release
