Unison offers free UC solution

Unison, a New York City voice start-up, will offer a unified communications system for free, the company announced Wednesday. Unison will provide a Linux-based client that will include telephony, e-mail, contacts and presence and instant messaging.

The company will support the free product with sponsorships, and the first companies to get "in Unison" will be Canonical, a London-based sponsor of Ubuntu, and Intermedia, a hosted business applications provider.

Unison's offering consists of its Unison Server, which powers the text and voice communications, and a Unison Desktop, which contains all communication methods in one client. Unison asserts that IT department will save a lot money with the Unison product because it combines email, directory and IM servers in one, and it's free.

"Microsoft's CEO said last year that his two greatest challenges are Linux and ad-supported software," said Rurik Bradbury, Unison Technologies Chief Marketing Officer. "Unison is both of these - fast, powerful, easy-to-use software that is powered by Linux and also sponsor-supported, so it is totally free to use. With our new enterprise software model, Unison will mount a serious challenge to Microsoft's highly-profitable Exchange franchise all over the world, especially in developing countries."

The company estimates that Microsoft's Exchange system costs upwards of $2,000 per user per year at a 50-person firm, sending budgets for communication through the roof. Some companies will at least experiment with Unison, because the potential upside is huge if it functions well.

Can Unison's sponsors provide enough dollars to enable the company maintain its service? It claims to have a powerful system, without licensing fees Microsoft and other UC providers charge, but how it will maintain performance without generating income from its users. Can sponsorships alone prop up a free UC solution? We'll see.

The software is available to download at www.unison.com

For more:
- you can see the press release here

Microsoft gains favor against Cisco in UC, say analysts

As Microsoft and Cisco battle it out to be the unified communications champion, analysts are starting to give Microsoft the edge in the race for leadership and vision.

Microsoft has long embraced UC from an email and "software-centric" approach, while Cisco has leveraged a PBX and voice focus. Enterprises have moved beyond simply thinking about voice and VoIP and now have expanded requirements to focus on presence as the lever to integrate communications into businesses processes to boost productivity. Presence is easily embedded into a broad range of applications.

Cisco hasn't been sitting still, first buying WebEx, then beefing up the online collaboration suite with everything from video to third-party widgets. The lines between the two vendors have become increasingly blurry as feature sets and functions become similar.

However, differences matter. Users are frustrated that Cisco and Microsoft UC solutions aren't interoperable, frustrating companies that want to mix and match and don't want a single-vendor solution.

Six reasons to switch to IP phones

VoIP News has released a six-point checklist for companies considering an IP phone system, and the recommendations come as little surprise. Outdated phone systems, phone system costs and customer accessibility topped the list of reasons a business manager should consider switching to an IP-based telephony solution.

The report also mentioned the efficiency gains across the company after implementation of IP phone systems as a salient reason to abandon PSTN services.

With costs rising and budgets tightening, IP phone systems also can build a strong telecommuting segment of employees, which could lower a company's bottom line by cutting back on office space and travel expenses while making an attractive proposition to quality employees. Who really wants to commute anyway?

Another plus: IP phone systems make those remote employees more efficient through presence and IM capabilities, further adding value to the company.

For more:
- VoIP News has the full report here

Kremlinology and the Vocito/GrandCentral app

Back in the days of the Cold War, intelligence analysts would pour over cryptic statements and publicly released photos published in the Soviet-run newspapers to gain clues as to the real state of affairs behind the "Iron Curtain." Today, observers are forced to do the same thing to make educated guesses on what Google is doing with GrandCentral.

The latest clue is the release of Vocito through GoogleCode, a Mac desktop user interface for GrandCentral. Vocito enables users to easily dial anyone from their desktop, utilizing GrandCentral to dial a remote phone and a local phone simultaneously to connect people together. For Mac users, it integrates into Address Book, Quicksilver, supports "tel" URLs and is fully scriptable. You can use it to build and save little applets to automatically dial your phone with a double-click.

But what does it mean? In the general discussion of the product, there's the whole "GrandCentral is currently in a limited beta" - a state they've been in since Obama started running for President. But the author urges us to run out and reserve a GrandCentral number now to "get in on the action as soon as more invites become available." Certainly, there's the implication that more invites will become available sometime in the near future, preferably before Obama has to start his re-election campaign.

For more:
- Go visit the Vocito web page. Maybe there's something airbrushed out of the pictures we've missed.

BT surveys on UC

Hot on the heels of its VoIP survey, BT is now reporting companies are taking a "phased approach" to adopting unified communication (UC) and collaboration (UCC) technologies. We're going to stick with UC for this discussion since the "collaboration" part is typically rolled into the UC tent.

The largest segment of survey respondents - 37 percent - will implement one UC application at a time. The next largest segment - 29 percent - plans to implement several UC applications simultaneously, with the latter approach the favorite of 42 percent of IT organizations supporting over 10,000 employees.

Survey respondents will look for help in implementing UC from multiple vendors, especially those who demonstrate technology leadership and the ability to integrate products from multiple vendors. Nearly half of those IT organizations will turn to service providers such as (ta-da!) BT.

Also, 22 percent of respondents reported implementing some aspects of a comprehensive UC solution, while 21 percent have no UC underway; the latter cite organizational and cultural issues as roadblocks to UC adoption. Over the next two years, a half dozen UC components will be implemented by a majority of those organizations responding, with unified messaging and presence being implemented most often in the coming 12 months; desktop video conferencing, "immersive video," document management and workflow are also on the to-do list.

Cisco sees UC profits, but slowing future sales

On Wednesday, Cisco announced smoking growth in its Advanced Technologies and unified communication areas. However, the company is battening down its hatches with a hiring freeze and other cost-cutting measures in anticipation of a slower economy.

Advanced Technologies, which includes unified communications, wireless LAN, video, security and networked home products, was up 17 percent from last year, with a total of $2.7 billion in revenue. Of that, unified communications grew 22 percent, while security was up 19 percent from last year. Cisco believes it has the strongest positions in customer relationships in the enterprise and service provider markets.

Cisco's belt-tightening measures include the aforementioned hiring freeze, and cuts in travel, events and marketing expenditures. The company expects to trim expenses by $1 billion for its second quarter. Currently, U.S. orders are down 8 percent, with enterprise orders declining in the "high teens."

Revenues are expected to decline 5 to 10 percent in the second quarter but long term growth rates of 12 to 17 percent are still predicted.

FierceVoIP Leaders: Roberta Mackintosh, Executive Director of Advanced Voice and UC, Verizon Business

FierceVoIP sat down with Roberta Mackintosh, Executive Director of Advanced Voice and UC&C for Verizon Business, to discuss the VoIP industry and Verizon Business's plans for unified communications.

Fierce VoIP: What are some key trends you see emerging in the VoIP space right now?

Mackintosh: If we take a macro view, you have to recognize the explosion of unified communications and advanced voice products. It's gone from 18 months ago, when we were just having conversations with some large, lead clients about unified communications, to now when it's at the forefront of their communications strategy. We're seeing a lot of interest in people wanting to make decisions in voice telephony that will help them evolve to the UC solution that fits their company the best.

FierceVoIP: What are some of the ways you tailor solutions to individual companies?

Mackintosh: We want to give our clients a clear understanding of our approach to unified communications solutions and the capabilities of our systems, so that we can match them to their expectations for their products. We need to understand what they're trying achieve with unified communications to assist them in meeting their objectives.

Since Verizon Business is an IP communications specialist and has capabilities across the board, we can provide VoIP-based inbound and outbound calling, automated calling, unified communications or a hybrid solution depending on the customer and its situation. We work with several different vendors and have significant inventory to find the best match of products and services for the individual client.

FierceVoIP: What do you think will be the driver(s) for growth in the space as we enter 2009?

Mackintosh: I think people are seeing two key benefits in IP communications, and especially unified communications. The first one is the personnel benefit. Efficiency increases with unified communications because there is more control gained over work flow and time management. The second benefit is business applications, and this is not fully recognized yet. As the applications begin to really demonstrate good ROI, I think they are going to really drive growth.

FierceVoIP: Can you think of specific verticals that stand to gain from integrating business applications and unified communications deployments?

Mackintosh: Shipping companies, for instance, can identify problems more easily and stop shipments before they go out with something that's just going to have to be recalled. Keeping one shipment back so that the problem can be identified and remedied would have significant benefit logistically and financially for that company. It's also a mystery to see how much benefit could come from UC deployments to the government sector, especially at the state and local level. The higher education space is also one to watch closely. The challenges we have in both markets is really finding and testing the applications that will make a difference for their employees.

FierceVoIP: What are some roadblocks you have seen to unified communications adoption?

Mackintosh: If the CIO's of the organizations are not intimately aware of the business processes of the rest of the employees, that can cause them not to implement the business applications to full potential. We also want to shift the functionality from a manual process to an automatic one, so that the solution is as easy to use as possible. That really helps bring UC into a business. I think it will be awhile before you see really widespread UC adoption, because it has some stepping stones to get over, such as making all applications IP-based and platform agnostic.

FierceVoIP: Who do you see as Verizon Business's biggest competitor in the space?

Mackintosh: Most of our traditional competitors have an offering they are pitching as a unified communications solution, but when you look at the services, it's really not a full UC product. AT&T, for instance, bought a conferencing company and basically renamed that division as unified communications. BT operates more on a big deal basis, and doesn't integrate as well because Verizon Business has a unique perspective and gives honest advice about which product will work best for the individual customer, since we're not tied to a specific vendor. We are seeing some aggressive expansions by Microsoft, Cisco and Nortel that we're watching closely.

OnRelay, Top VoIP Company 2008: FierceVoIP, Fierce 15

OnRelay

Where it's based: London, England
When it was founded: 2000
Website: www.onrelay.com

Fierce because: OnRelay believes the desktop handset is dead. Integrating the personal cell phone with the office IP PBX - a mobile PBX or "mobile branch exchange" (MBX) is the wave of the future. The company holds fundamental patents in fixed mobile integration, so it'll be interesting to see how its portfolio plays out against other FMC/mobile UC offerings in the future.

Fundamentally, OnRelay plays to three trends in the marketplace: 1) Millenials believe that handsets are so 20th century; 2) People use their personal phones for home and business use; OnRelay (like other mobile UC solutions, to be fair) enables the way to separate personal calls from work calls without having to pay for a cell phone; and 3) In a tight economy, nobody wants to pay for capital expense (handsets) or operational expense (leasing handsets) if they can avoid it.

We're not so sure if the desktop handset is totally dead quite yet, but you have to appreciate OnRelay's Fierce opinion on the subject.

DiVitas Networks, Top VoIP Company: FierceVoIP, Fierce 15

DiVitas Networks

Where it's based: Mountain View, Calif.
When it was founded: 2005
Website: www.divitas.com

Why it's Fierce: Mobile UC is the place to be and the DiVitas corporate vision continues to steadily evolve beyond the me-too basics of dual-mode, FMC yadda-yadda into an integrated philosophy including microblogging, social networking, and visual voicemail features. Appliances are out and a software-only philosophy is in. Finally, the company also has a hosted service option for VoIP providers along with its traditional enterprise model.

In three years time, DiVitas has rapidly moved from the "race car" logo award phase into announcing customer deployments across a variety of markets, including carrier, education, government, and health care. We're looking forward for the company to take the next step along the Hourihan path with making bigger and better customer wins. And bonus points for the openness of founder/CEO/foodie Vivek Khuller.

FierceVoIP's Fierce 15 - 2008

VoIP is maturing. However, there is still a long way to go before VoIP is the standard of the land and TDM is relegated to the dust bin of history along with crank phones and pulse dialing.

In many ways, VoIP has just started its journey. We're moving out of simple voice replacement and lower-cost minutes, into the more dynamic and richer world of voice mashups, mobile UC, and enterprise UC, which enables more efficient business processes. He who moves beyond the "Me too" trap of sameness to deliver rich and unique applications and services is sure to survive and thrive.

Success in this environment has to be measured by a cycle of continuous improvement - not a single flash in the pan, but a series of achievements building on top of each other. You have to build or acquire products and features, you have to build relationships, and, ultimately, you have to build a base of paying customers.

Openness is goodness. The open source telephony movement can be defined in many ways, ranging from a fully open code base, to open standards, to open APIs anyone can use to build mashups. Openness is not going away. It is my pleasure to announce the top VoIP companies -- The 2008 FierceVoIP Fierce 15 in alphabetical order:

SPOTLIGHT: Implementation headaches for VoIP & UC

Adding the latest and greatest in voice and UC to your network can generate five different types of problems, says Processor.com.

Adding or migrating voice to an existing network can result in problems if a careful assessment of existing resources isn't taken. Care must be taken to provide priority to voice packets over data and to make sure there's enough bandwidth to support voice in the first place. Older equipment, even old Ethernet switches and shared hubs -- not to mention first generation WiFi devices - weren't built to support QoS.

Shifting to VoIP also brings security and continuity of service considerations you just don't find in the POTS world.

For more:
- Processor.com gives advice on tackling VoIP and UC trouble. Article.

Where, oh where, has Grand Central gone?

Google hasn't mentioned any plans for virtual phone service Grand Central, which it acquired in July 2007 for $50 million. ZDNet's Sam Diaz reports that, after a blog post he wrote calling Grand Central "his favorite telecommuting tool," readers tried to sign up, but were informed that new registrations have been suspended.

Diaz got a response from Google claiming the product had been put into a closed beta test, hence the closure of new registrations. He makes a valid point that Google has had its hands full with all of its recent product announcements and might have let Grand Central fall by the wayside for the time being.

Grand Central has many convenient and useful features, like temporary call forwarding to another number, unified messaging and web-based voicemail. Integrating the voice application with other features could add value to some of Google's other services, like GMail and YouTube, for instance. With its immense research and development budget, you would think Google could take Grand Central's interface and create something innovative. We'll see if the next few months hold any Grand plans for Google in this area.

For more:
- see Diaz's post on ZDnet.com here

Microsoft steps to UC interoperability

Friday, Microsoft announced it signed up with the Advanced Message Queuing Protocol (AMQP) Working Group, an organization focusing on the development on an open industry standard for ubiquitous messaging. In other words, a standard so apps can talk to each other.

Microsoft says it is signing up at the behest of existing AMQP members, including several of its customers in the financial services industry; figure Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs and/or J.P. Morgan "requested" that Microsoft sign up. Cisco, Novell and Red Hat also are among the AMQP members.

Since AMPQ is a spec for platform-neutral, open standards-based business messaging, this would presumably mean that, down the road, Microsoft unified communications apps would be able to communicate with Cisco, Red Hat and Novell UC apps. Customers would be able to mix and match applications to improve business process communication both within an enterprise and outside the corporate infrastructure.

AMQP may provide greater interoperability for a number of vertical "scenarios," in addition to obvious ones for financial services, insurance and health care.

For more:
- Microsoft's press release on joining the AMQP working group.

Cisco's WebEx gets UC SaaS makeover

Cisco's WebEx Connect, a software-as-a-service (SaaS) offering combining presence, IM, web meeting, and team space for workplace collaboration, is getting heavy play as a unified communications solution.

Offering a hosted solution, Cisco WebEx Connect provides a "toolbox" for working with collaborative project data. WebEx's wikis, calendaring and social bookmarking are rolled together with Cisco's UC platform to include integrated messaging components such as video conferencing and IM.

Happiness is provided by the ability to provide a "cloud-based" home for project work and communications, while IT gets the benefit of being able to provide collaboration in addition to policy and security management. Since WebEx Connect lives outside of the host company's firewall, enterprises can work with customers and partners without compromising security.

Cisco WebEx Connect may cause some déjà vu to anyone who's seen Microsoft SharePoint. As one might expect, SharePoint has better integration with Microsoft products, while anyone already familiar with Cisco's UC platform will want to look at WebEx Connect.

IDC: UC hype affecting phone, service purchases

Publishing two survey reports today, IDC says increasing "attention and buzz" around unified communications is getting to decision-makers in how they select phone systems and services.

The first study, "Key Trends in Enterprise VoIP 2008: Customer Perspectives on Unified Communications," shows that end users have become more sophisticated in understanding UC and have higher expectations about what solution providers should be able to offer.

Survey respondents ranked Microsoft, Cisco, Avaya and IBM as the top 4 key vendors in their company's UC plans; last year, respondents ranked Cisco, Avaya, Microsoft and Nortel as their top 4 UC choices. More than 41 percent of respondents believe that advanced applications integrating business communications with business applications should come directly from Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Notes or Domino environments.

What's more, 79 percent of respondents believe that UC is a desktop or mobile-based solution or platform that combines a common inbox for email/fax/voicemail, advanced IP telephony calling and management, Web/audio/videoconferencing, instant messaging, and presence management, which can be integrated with business-critical applications.

"Key Trends in Enterprise VoIP 2008: North American Enterprises' Buying Behavior," IDC's second study, focused on how U.S. enterprises are buying phone systems and services. The intro of desktop-based IP telephony solutions by Microsoft and IBM has led to a shift in focus on the source of key advanced communications functionality and call control. Long distance savings, ability to integrate with existing business applications, and cost savings over legacy equipment are the three most popular reasons why businesses are currently using or planning to use IP telephony within the next 12 months. Finally, unified messaging, remote/teleworkers solutions, and videoconferencing are the top 3 IP communications applications expected to drive future investment in data and telephony network budgets.

For more:
- IDC says UC hype affecting telephony purchasing decisions.

Verizon Business adds managed Cisco UC solution

Verizon Business has unveiled a managed (i.e. hosted) UC & collaboration solution around Cisco's Unified Communications Manager 6.1 platform.

Verizon is the first major U.S.-based service provider to offer Cisco's UCM 6.1 platform to customers around the world. U.S. and many European customers get immediate availability for the offering and an Asia-Pacific launch is scheduled for early next year.

The new platform includes the standard functionality to integrate voice mail, email and IM, as well as unified message (voice and email via one source access), single number access and unified presence to deliver visibility into a user's availability for a phone or IM chat.

Del Monte Foods is the launch/showcase customer for Verizon's UC announcement and has deployed the service across the enterprise with plans to leverage the platform to support the company's internal contact center needs.

Planning and pondering UC

Adding mobility to the UC equation has only made life more interesting for enterprise planners. After all, planners already need to worry about business process improvement, individual end user requirements and technology implementation alternatives.

Art Rosenberg over at UCstrategies.com rolls out a lengthy analysis on how to set priorities in mapping out UC implementation planning. A "top-down" approach is recommended to get the best efficiencies out of applying UC practices and technologies, as UC affects not only internal business processes, but also touches partners and customers involved in a process.

Contact centers - the traditional haunt of CTI and UC practices - get a workout since UC technology is getting the best bang for buck spent by more efficiently handling customer calls and aiding in customer retention (i.e. get to the customer faster, customer is happier).

At the end of the piece, there's a list of eight questions worth circulating to your UC planning committee/team to stimulate discussion and debate.

For more:
- Art Rosenberg's blog on UC for the Enterprise at ucstrategies.com

Nortel adds SMB, medium business UC hardware

Unfazed by predictions of doom by market analysts, Nortel continues to roll out new products, this time aiming at the SMB and medium-sized business sectors with data and UC server offerings.

"We've been pretty vocal," said Nortel VP Wes Durow. "We've placed a bet, we're going to grow and invest in the enterprise space. We've been focused on the UC portfolio with Microsoft and IBM on the larger side... the announcements extend our UC story to SMBs."

The first product announced today, Nortel's Business Communications Manager (BCM) 450, is aimed at medium-sized businesses and will support up to 300 employees. It is designed, in part, to be a replacement box for "tens of thousands" of deployed Norstar systems. It will provide a growth path to IP while delivering UC and leveraging the existing investment in existing infrastructure, including cable and handsets. Durow said channel partners have been "very vocal" about the need to release the product and said it had been brought to market two months in advance due to channel demand.

UC features being delivered on the BCM 450 include unified messaging, meet-me conferencing for up to 120 participants, CTI integration for use with third-party applications and intelligent call center functionality. A message forwarding capability to direct voicemails and faxes to the most convenient desktop or mobile device is expected to be available in "one or two months."

On the data side of the house, the BSG 8 and 12 series are (almost) all-in-one devices combining the functions of wired and wireless switching, router, firewall, VPN and intrusion detection, SIP gateway with integrated ATA, and Quality of Service (QoS) prioritizing into one box. The QoS functional is described as application aware, so voice and video should get priority on the network over vanilla data traffic.

The BSG 8 can support up to 50 concurrent SIP sessions and the manufacturers suggested retail price is $1,316. The BSG 12 supports up to 100 concurrent SIP sessions and runs from $3,377 to $4,198, depending on configuration.

BroadSoft and Microsoft announce hosted UC alliance

Piling on to a stack of announcements this week at its annual users' conference, BroadSoft announced the general availability of a hosted unified communications services for businesses, based on Microsoft software.

The BroadSoft/Microsoft solution is built on Microsoft Solution for Hosted Messaging and Collaboration (HMC) version 4.5 and integrated with BroadSoft's BroadWorks platform. Since it is a hosted offering, businesses can get unified communications without the fixed capital cost of servers and software, and without the dedicated operational costs of maintaining them.

BroadSoft and Microsoft are underlining the ability to "enhance business processes" by being able to tie in vanilla UC features (i.e. IM, email, phone, video) to business process software such as CRM, accounting and enterprise resource planning.

It will be interesting to see how this announcement plays out both to BroadSoft customers and Microsoft's favorite UC partner Nortel. Microsoft's hosted solution first turned up on Nortel hardware, and Nortel has enjoyed a most-favored UC partner status in larger integration deals.

For more:
- Microsoft's press release on working with Broadsoft.

Polycom announces new interoperability for SpectraLink phones

Polycom announced it has extended the interoperability capabilities of its SpectraLink 8000 series of phones to meet open VoIP standards in addition to the proprietary protocols it already supports. SpectraLink now has full interoperability with SIP-based systems, and Polycom chose a fitting event, Interop New York, to launch the product.

The SpectraLink WiFi handsets can now operate as extensions of the VoIP call server and have full business capabilities, such as caller ID, conferencing and messaging, among others.

Ben Guderian, vice president of product management for Polycom's SpectraLink, said the offering is perfect for enterprises with large campuses that benefit from cost-effective WiFi communications.

"There is a lot of effort going into mobile UC right now with emphasis on cellular functionality, but what about those enterprises whose employees are not at desks, but rather working on a warehouse floor or hospital ward?" Guderian said. "Our phones allow for decreased use of paging and more expensive cellular connections, plus they are much more durable than cellular devices." Guderian literally hammered that point home by repeatedly banging the handset on the table where we sat, with no damage to the phone.

Polycom representatives said they are marketing the new offering to hospitality, health care, manufacturing and retail stores primarily.

For more:
- see the Polycom press release announcing SpectraLink 8000
