As with Ingate Systems, NexTone is fierce not so much for its products as for its leadership. Too much of the VoIP world uses the PSTN as its network backbone. That's expensive and degrades call quality. NexTone is important because of its work in VoIP peering--the interconnection of VoIP networks to keep traffic IP-based until its ultimate termination. NexTone says its IntelliConnect System carries more than half of the world's international VoIP traffic. That makes peering good business for NexTone, but it's good business for the rest of the VoIP industry, too.
